How Duke Energy Net Metering Works

Solar net metering is a system that lets solar energy system owners manage the energy generated by their solar panels. It is an efficient and ecologically conscious way of managing the energy produced by a home that has solar panels installed for their electricity. Solar panels installed at home are usually set up to supply the needed electricity of the household. The system produces enough for the occupants to sustain the electricity consumption that they need on a typical day-to-day basis. However, there are times when the electricity produced by the system is not enough to supply the needs of the household. When this happens, the home draws electricity from the energy grid. The net metering program measures the amount taken from the energy grid and bills it to the household. There are also times during which the solar panel system produces more energy than the household uses. When this happens, the overproduced electricity is sent to the energy grid and the net metering system measures how much has been sent in order to give credits to the household for the amount of energy given to the grid.

The Basics of Duke Energy Net Metering

Duke Energy is the largest electric power holding company in the United States. They provide a net metering program that helps households who produce their own electricity through their solar panel systems manage their electricity costs by providing credits for the excess electricity provided to the energy grid. By connecting a household with its electricity-producing system into the energy grid of Duke Energy, it enables this household to access the energy from the Duke Energy system as well as to provide energy from the home system into the Duke Energy grid.

Duke Energy net metering is available in the states of Florida, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina.

The cost of Duke Energy net metering may vary by state. Different states may also have different policies regarding caps and bill credits. If the credits accumulated are not used by the end of the yearly billing cycle, they can be paid out annually every March. To get connected to the Duke Energy net metering system, a residential customer may send an application and pay the corresponding fee depending on the sate and the size of the solar panel system of the home.

The Duke Energy Company

As a power holding company, Duke Energy sources the electricity that they provide to their subscribers through several different means. They have several plants across each state to produce electricity. Some of the different plants include biomass-fired, nuclear, coal-fired, hydroelectric, oil- and gas-fired plants, wind farms and solar farms. Providing solar net metering to households with solar panel systems is another way for Duke Energy to source the electricity that they provide consumers. By sourcing the electricity from households that have a surplus of production, the energy does not go to waste and also provides credits to the households that can serve as an income source for them. While net metering can provide an income to households that give energy to the grid, there is a limit to the solar panel system that can be installed at home.

Generally, solar panels are installed to supply the needs of the household and the system installed is computed based on the typical consumption of the household. While it would be nice to have a bigger system to generate income, there is a cap on the size of the system that can be installed at home. Essentially, the solar net metering program was created to manage energy production, consumption, and distribution, but it was not meant primarily for income generation.
