There is a wide variety of government support for solar, including grants for panels and additional equipment, tax credits, and other incentives.

These programs are effective at reducing costs and boosting solar savings. They are administered by federal, state and local governments as well as utility companies.

While there are fewer true “grants”, there are still some available. By grants in this sense, we mean a direct reduction in the cost of solar installations, without having to wait for a tax bill or anything additional.

The following areas have government grants available for solar panels for your home:

New York State – The NY Sun Program – The NY Sun program provides a direct reduction to the cost of a solar installation on a New York State property. It is granted directly to the installer, who is required to pass the cost reduction on to the purchaser. The amounts vary greatly depending on the size of the installation and the utility provider of the purchaser.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power – the LADWP’s program includes direct rebates of $0.25 per watt installed of solar.
